VO2 max is the gold standard for measuring cardiorespiratory fitness. It measures your body’s ability to take in oxygen and deliver it to your muscles through your heart and blood vessels. Yes, you can improve your cardiovascular fitness even in midlife. If you were previously sedentary, you can improve significantly. At advanced fitness levels improvements become harder, but meaningful gains are possible at almost any age.
The 2 Pillars of Training to Increase Your VO2 Max Level
Zone 2 (The Base):
Long, steady-state sessions at an effort level where you can still hold a conversation in full sentences. This moderate intensity level improves mitochondrial function, is joint-friendly and excellent for longevity. This should form around 80% of your midlife cardio. Think about brisk walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, rowing.
Zone 4&5 / Maximal Efforts (The Ceiling)
Higher-intensity interval training pushes the heart to its near-maximum capacity. This is a very potent stimulus for VO2 max and improves the heart’s “pump” strength (cardiac output).
